Tamworth 2 - 1 Colwyn Bay - 7/11/00 - FA Trophy 1st round replay
Bay
bowed out of the FA Umbro Trophy at the first hurdle following a 2-1 replay
defeat at Dr Marten’s League Premier Division side Tamworth.
The
home side enjoyed the better of the first half and they took the lead in the
41st minute, when Warren Haughton
scored from close range after Richie Roberts had found a 20 yard Nicky Carter
drive too hot to handle.
Midway
through the second half, Bay
bounced back with an equaliser. James McIlvogue was adjudged to have been fouled
and from the resultant free kick Jonathan
Cross stepped up to fire low and hard past Darren Acton and give
the Bay some hope.
But
the Bay’s FA Trophy hopes were to be denied for this season when seven minutes
from time Tamworth snatched the all important winner. The move started with Mark
Hallam who beat three players before passing to Haughton, who in turn fed Mark
Turner to drive the ball nicely past Roberts.
But
the game ended on a sour note for the match-winner, however, as he was shown the
red card for a foul on Graham Roberts in the 88th minute.
For the Bay another disappointing Cup exit at the
first stage, who must now concentrate on building on their impressive start to
the league season.
