Colwyn Bay 0 - 0 Frickley Athletic - 03/03/01 - League
In a
proverbial 'six pointer' at Llanelian Road, the Bay deserved more than they got
in this UniBond Premier League encounter against fellow strugglers Frickley
Athletic, although they managed to halt a run of 10 consecutive defeats with a
0-0 draw.
Bay took the initiative from the outset in search of the three points which has
eluded them since October and they and were unlucky not to score in the opening
minutes, Craig Lawton broke down the left and delivered a ball across the goal
mouth which was just missed by Deiniol Graham.
The Seagulls had a string of chances, with Marc Limbert racing down the right,
only to see his fierce drive blocked, five minutes later Limbert
turned provider and delivered a good cross which Alun Evans headed just wide of
the upright.
Richie Roberts in the Bay goal was in fine form to deny Frickley, Bay continued
to dominate and on 32 minutes it was again live wire Limbert who
saw his shot from the left fly narrowly wide. The visitors were resolute
in defence and set out their stall for the point rarely threatening the home
side's goal.
Again it was Limbert who threatened to break the deadlock with a free-kick that
once more was just the wrong side of the post.
Frickley then launched a counter attack and it was Richie Roberts in the Bay
goal who saved at the feet of the on coming Leroy Chambers who nearly gave the
visitors three points they would have scarcely deserved on the balance of play.
Bay battled to the final whistle and on 90 minutes Alun Evans made a
scintillating run past a number of players before losing the ball as he shaped
to shoot.
A further blow to the Bay was when Deiniol Graham was stretchered off in the
dying minutes with hamstring trouble.
The results means that Bay now occupy the second relegation place two points
behind Frickley but still have five games in hand on their relegation threatened
rivals, a situation they need to start taking advantage of.
