Altrincham 3 - 0 Colwyn Bay - 12/09/00 - League
Three
goals in the last 20 minutes finally killed off the Bay’s challenge in an
entertaining UniBond League Premier Division clash at Altrincham.
Before
the match the Robins were one place ahead of the Bay in tenth place, but it was
the Bay who created the early chance in the opening minute when Marc Limbert
crossed for Alun Evans who headed straight at the ‘keeper. and in the first
half missed a host of chances, with former Conwy striker Kevin Ellison wasting
three chances, whilst Barry Crowe also went close on two occasions.
For
the Bay, chances fell for among other Alun Evans, Marc Limbert and
Deiniol Graham, with Graham failing to capitalise on a good chance when he found
himself one on one with Alty ‘keeper Stuart Coburn only to fire his effort
over the bar.
The
Bay contributed to an entertaining game, and were looking as though they were
going to hold out for a draw until the 69th minute when Carl Furlong finished
off a move after Ellison’s cross.
In
reply, the Bay had chances through Limbert and Deiniol Graham, but the
impressive Ellison put Alty further ahead on 83 minutes when he finished off
after Richard Landon had headed down Barry Crowe’s cross.
Three
minutes from time Landon wrapped things up for the Robins when he went unmarked
to head home a Steve Hawes corner giving the home side a 3-0 win, a scoreline
which was a little harsh on the Bay’s battling efforts. Speaking in the North
Wales Weekly News on the game, Assistant Manager Dean Martin said:
“I thought we played some good football at times and didn’t deserve
that scoreline. The game was very tight and whoever got the first goal was
always going to be in the box seat, but we can take encouragement from the way
we knocked it around at times”
