Accrington Stanley 2 - 2 Colwyn Bay - 9/12/00 - League
The Bay continued their recent
revival with a good draw at top six Accrington, although they should have come
back from Lancashire with all three points.
The Bay were chasing the game in the opening 20 minutes, but against the run of
play they opened the scoring. Marc Limbert's corner kick creating confusion in
the host's goalmouth and James McIlvogue blasted the ball in from 10 yards.
This gave the Bay confidence and in the 28th minute McIlvogue ran onto an inch
perfect Alun Evans through ball only to be sent sprawling by Stanley keeper
Harris on the edge of the box. Harris was booked when a red card might have
seemed a more appropriate punishment, and Marc Limbert saw his free-kick come
back off the wall.
Bay continued to press forward, Alun Evans's drive was deflected narrowly wide
while at the other end Paul Mullins header was saved by Richie Roberts. Marc
Limbert chipped an 18 yard free kick over the bar but the dismissal of Stuart
Gelling for dissent on the hour gave the home side the advantage, and three
minutes later substitute Paddy Wilson fired home from the spot after Stanley
were awarded a dubious penalty for a foul on Mullin.
The Seagulls rallied and in the 78th minute Evans latched onto Limbert's
exquisite through ball rounded the static Harris and slid the ball into an empty
net.
Bay looked set for the win but Stanley had other ideas and grabbed a point in
the dying minutes. Colwyn were hit with a sucker punch when Paul Mullin robbed
Bay skipper Graham Roberts on the touchline and pulled the ball back for Russell
Payne who crossed for Wilson to nod his second goal of the game.
