COLWYN BAY 3 - 5 LEIGH RMI - 24/04/00 - League
Championship
chasing Leigh RMI were the winners of an eight goal thriller at Llanelian Road
on Easter Bank Holiday Monday.
Leigh
took the initiative early on and it was no surprise that they took the lead on
eight minutes when Brian Ross headed home after former Evertonian Mark Ward’s
free kick had hit the post.
Bay
hit back on 18 minutes when Peter Donnelly, who had an excellent game, found
Alun Evans, who ran through to slot the ball past former Welsh international
goalkeeper David Felgate. But no sooner had the Bay equalised, the visitors were
2-1 up with Steve Jones providing the pass for Ged Kielty.
The
Railwaymen went further ahead on 26 minutes when Tony Black crossed the ball
into the box and debutant Bleddyn Jones unluckily sliced the ball into his own
net.
The
dominant Leigh scored a fourth after half an hour’s play when Dave Ridings
found Steve Jones and Richie Roberts could do little to stop Jones’s powerful
strike.
Bay
came back fighting in the second half and pulled a goal back on 50 minutes, with
Peter Donnelly finding the bottom corner with a header. But Leigh went further
ahead minutes later when Tony Black’s cross was headed in by Bay substitute
Mark Price.
Bay
scored a third on 60 minutes through Colin Caton’s powerful volley, and a
better second half performance from the Seagulls could have yielded more goals.
Marc Limbert went close with a free kick, whilst Alun Evans’s volley and a
Peter Donnelly effort were also close.
Tony
Black could have wrapped things up for Leigh late on, but Richie Roberts was on
hand to deny him.
