EMLEY 1- 2 COLWYN BAY - 08/04/00 - League
The
Bay finally put paid to their Emley jinx to notch up an impressive and important
win in West Yorkshire. Following three previous defeats this season in the
League, the FA Umbro Trophy and recently in the Unifilla Cup semi-final,
three points were vital if the Bay were to move away from the relegation
dog fight.
The
task at hand looked even harder for the Bay when captain Colin Caton had to go
off injured to be replaced by Glen Graham. But four minutes later they were to
go in front when Marc Limbert’s corner
was flicked on by Peter Donnelly for Dave Norman to head home at the far post.
The Bay restricted the home side to long range shots and went in at half time in
the lead.
The
Bay went further ahead just two minutes after the restart. Top scorer James
McIlvogue was denied by Andy Rhodes and the resultant corner from Limbert struck
Paul David, who misdirected his header into his own goal.
Alun
Evans could have put the Bay three up, but former Oldham ‘keeper Rhodes
blocked his shot. Emley hit back on 78 minutes with Danny Day scoring from close
range.
The
home side could have equalised with just three minutes remaining when Marc
Limbert conceded a late penalty. But Richie Roberts was the hero as he guessed
correctly and dived to his right
and deny the Steve Nicholson spot kick.
Three
welcome points for the Bay and a belated win over Emley, their first since the
1996/97 season.
