COLWYN BAY 0 - 7 BAMBER BRIDGE - 01/05/00 - League
The
Bay’s miserable home record ended as Bamber Bridge inflicted the Bay’s
heaviest defeat of the season and their heaviest home defeat for many years on
May Bank Holiday Monday.
On
a beautiful afternoon, it was all gloom for the Seagulls, who will be pleased
that the end of a very difficult and disappointing season is nigh.
With
both side’s assured of Premier Division safety, there was very little to play
for except pride, although at the end of it the Bay’s pride will have been
badly dented.
Despite
what was to transpire over the afternoon, it was the home side that started the
brighter, with a couple of chances falling their way early on, most notably
through Marc Limbert and James McIlvogue.
Indeed
it was from a Bay corner that Bamber Bridge opened their account for the
afternoon after quarter of an hour. Bay could do nothing from Marc Limbert’s
corner and from the resulting breakaway Lee Trundle spotted Richie Roberts off
his line and chipped him to make it 1-0.
Five minutes later it was
2-0 to the visitors, when the unfortunate Roberts tried to clear a back pass by
Jamie Fairhurst but the ball bobbled on the bumpy pitch and Andy Whittaker was
on hand to slot the ball home.
Trundle
scored his second on 22 minutes with a left foot curler from 25 yards out.
Minutes later he completed his hat-trick, Colin Caton fouled Trundle 25 yards
out and from the resultant free kick the ball struck the post and then Richie
Roberts to end up in the back of the net.
There
was no respite for the Bay in the second half, as Trundle scored his fourth a
minute after the interval when he broke down the left and cut inside to crack an
unstoppable drive into the net from 15 yards.
Brig
made it six on 65 minutes when Whittaker broke through the middle to coolly chip
Roberts and 14 minutes from time chief tormentor Trundle raced down the left
again to square the ball to the unmarked Whittaker who netted from close range
and complete his hat-trick.
