Lancaster City 2 - 1 Colwyn Bay - 23/02/02 - League
Colwyn Bay fell to their
fourth consecutive defeat in the UniBond Premier Division at Lancaster City
despite a battling performance in difficult conditions.
On a heavy pitch it was the
home side who applied the early pressure, but Glen Graham and keeper Paul Smith
weathered any early storm.
The waether played a big part
in the opening goal, with the strong wind a factor in Lancaster’s first goal
on 25 minutes. Brian Welch headed the ball forward but the wind blew it back to
him and, with the Bay defence caught off guard, he was able to set up Butler
running from midfield to fire home from eight yards.
The visitors failed to test
the home keeper in the first-half apart from a Craig Lawton chance with Mark
Thornley blocked.
James McIlvogue, on for
Deiniol Graham, and Alun Evans began to cause quite a few problems for the
Lancaster defenders but in the 65th minute the Bay conceded a second goal
failing to clear a cross and Butler fired in from 10 yards to score his second
of the afternoon.
The
Seagulls did reduce the deficit with 16 minutes of the game remaining.
Owain Roberts cut in from the right and his cross caught the wind and the ball
crashed into the net off the bar.
The Bay could have claimed a
point in the last few minutes of the game and Roberts should have scored his
second. He was through on goal only to put his effort over the bar and the home
side held on to all three points and give themselves a boost as they chase
leaders Burton Albion for the UniBond Premier Division title.
