Frickley Athletic 2 - 1 Colwyn Bay - 06/04/02 - League

The Seagulls hopes of climbing the table were dealt a blow as they lost in Yorkshire.

It was the home side who forced the early pace with a series of attacks but Billy Stewart in the Bay goal was in fine form. He denied Simon Collins and Leroy Chambers but had no chance in the 11th minute when the home side took the lead.

Collins broke down the left and sent over a low cross that was volleyed into the net by Rory Prendergast from 10 yards. The Bay nearly equalised five minutes later. Jason Jones met a corner kick at the near post but his effort struck a post from 15 yards.

The Seagulls continued to press and two minutes later Deiniol Graham, returning after his injury lay off, beat the offside trap and rounded keeper Mark Wilkinson only to place his shot the wrong side of the Frickley post.

Graham again broke through free in the 38th minute but Wilkinson foiled him with a brilliant save when a goal seemed a certainty.

Colwyn Bay were level seven minutes into the second half when a Marc Limbert's free kick was turned in by James McIlvogue.

But five minutes later keeper Stewart, whose safe handling had been an inspiration to his side, allowed a stabbed shot from Collins to squirm under his body and roll over the line after Mark Reece had supplied the cross.

A goal behind and the Bay pushed more players forward in a desperate bid to salvage something from the game. Graham was denied by a fingertip save by Wilkinson in the 72nd minute as he managed to divert the close range drive over the bar.
