COLWYN BAY 5 - 0 GLANTRAETH (at Conwy Utd) - 03/05/00 - North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup Final Tie

The Bay overcame battling Glantraeth to clinch the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup in the Final at the Morfa Ground, Conwy.

The Bay dominated the first half and squandered a number of opportunities. The best early chance fell to Colin Caton, who headed just over following Marc Limbert’s cross. In the early exchanges the Bay could not convert their domination into goals and they could have paid for this as on a couple of occasions Glantraeth, on the counter attack could have taken a first half lead, but poor finishing let them down.

Half way through the first half the Bay thought they had taken the lead through Danny McGoona, but the referee adjudged that he had handled in the initial run up to the goal, although it was obvious that McGoona had controlled the ball with his chest.

The Anglesey side showed a lot of character and commitment and they might have taken the lead on 40 minutes when Peter McCann’s 35 yard rocket was fumbled by young Bay ‘keeper Martin Roberts, but Roberts managed to clear the danger just in time.

A minute before half time, and the Bay took the lead. Some good work in midfield set up Lee Congerton, and after a neat turn from the midfielder, he shot from 10 yards to give the Bay a 1-0 interval lead.

No sooner had the second half started, the Bay went further ahead when Peter Donnelly headed home from close range. The third goal came on 50 minutes, which effectively ended the contest. Marc Limbert supplied a centre for Colin Caton, whose powerful header found the back of the net. Six minutes later James McIlvogue made it four with a simple tap in.

The Bay could have gone further ahead on 68 minutes. Following a powerful run Danny McGoona was fouled in the box, and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a spot kick. Marc Limbert stepped up, but his effort hit the post.

The Bay took their foot off the pedal somewhat after that. Glantraeth battled until the end and had chances to score a consolation.

James McIlvogue scored his second of the night with a blistering drive six minutes from time and make it 5-0.

At the end of the game, Bay Captain Colin Caton stepped up to receive the Coast Challenge Cup, to the delight of the Bay fans.
