Colwyn Bay 1 - 0 Runcorn FC Halton - 18/09/01 - League
Following defeat at home to Bishop
Auckland three days earlier, Colwyn Bay got back to winning ways with a
narrow win over Runcorn, although the Linnets will rue a host of missed chances.
A goal from Jonathan Cross after 21 minutes was enough to gain all three points
for the Seagulls. Cross let fly from 30 yards catching Runcorn keeper Mark
Winstanley off guard as the ball hit the post and flew into the far corner.
Runcorn toiled to get back into the game, with their player manager Liam Watson
going desperately close five minutes later with a shot which sped across the
face of the gaping Bay goal.
Craig Hogg then had to head an effort from Paul McNally off the Bay goal line
and in the opening minutes of the second half Steve Latham went close.
Paul Smith was outstanding in the Bay's goal producing some fine saves, whilst
the Seagulls had chances of their own, most notably Stuart Scheuber who went
close twice.
A second goal seemed inevitable when James McIlvogue got a touch in a mad
scramble on the goal line but somehow the ball refused to go into the back of
the net.
