Colwyn Bay 1 - 2 Lancaster City - 18/08/01 - League

Battling Colwyn Bay, who were missing six players, deserved a share of the points as they lost a close game 2-1 against Lancaster City in this UniBond Premier League curtain raiser at Llanelian Road.

The new look Seagulls side found it difficult to get to grips with the visitors who forced a succession of corners early on.

Lancaster finally made the breakthrough after 31 minutes when the pacey Andy Whittaker burst through the home defence and lashed a shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner of the net.

This goal seemed to give Bay the impetus that they needed and they twice went close to levelling the match

Graham Roberts saw his 40 yard shot saved by Mark Thornley in the Lancaster City goal and Mark Limbert saw his 20 yard effort parried as the hosts twice went close to levelling the match.

After the break Colwyn Bay stepped up a gear and debutant John Fisher-Cooke must have thought he had levelled the match but saw his goal-bound header saved by Thornley.

The hosts were pushing hard for an equaliser and it came in the 64th minute when the always lively Mark Limbert let fly with a 30 yard curler that beat the outstretched Thornley and flew into the top corner.

Just as it seemed that the Seagulls had done enough to secure a share of the points Clitheroe's cross from the right was met by the head of Whittaker who secured maximum points for the visitors.

Bay almost snatched a deserved equaliser in injury time but James McIllvogue was unable to connect with Limbert's teasing cross.
