Colwyn Bay 1 - 2 Gateshead - 16/03/02 - League
The Bay failed to grab three vital
points in this UniBond League Premier Division match at home to Gateshead.
The Seagulls made a promising start when, in the third minute, Craig Lawton's
40-yard free kick was back-headed by James McIlvogue against the bar.
But Gateshead hit back two minutes later as dangerman Alderson saw his 10-yard
shot saved by Paul Smith.
The Bay keeper was at fault two minutes later, though, when he fumbled Paul
Anthony's drive and Alderson followed up to net from virtually on the goal-line.
Smith atoned with a brilliant save to tip Grant McAlinden's shot round the post
and he pulled off an equally fine stop to push Rob Painter's effort over the
bar.
The Seagulls came through this dodgy spell and a 30-yarder from Lawton was saved
by keeper Sam Russell before they drew level in the 45th minute.
Lawton's run was brough to a premature end when he was fouled by centre-half Rob
Jones and full-back Stuart Scheuber rifled the resulting free-kick from 20 yards
past the wall into the bottom corner of the net for only his second goal of the
season.
Early pressure after the break by Colwyn Bay led to a succession of corners and
in the 47th minute Jason Jones fed McIlvogue whose 10-yard shot was pushed over
by Russell.
A minute later Dean Williams put McIlvogue through but he fired into the side
netting under pressure.
Scheuber, who had an excellent game, beat three players in the 59th minute only
to see his curling drive from 20 yards flash narrowly wide of the post.
The game degenerated into a scrappy midfield battle where the Seagulls sorely
missed the power and creativity of the injured Marc Limbert.
The next goalmouth action came in the 83rd minute when Deiniol Graham, who had
hit seven goals in his previous seven matches, fired agonisingly wide from 12
yards.
It was a crucial moment and with just four minutes remaining, Gateshead launched
a counter-attack and Alderson cut in from the left. His shot hit the post but he
ran in to hammer the winner from four yards.
