Colwyn Bay 2 - 2 Farsley Celtic - 30/09/01 - F.A. Cup
The Bay were lucky to
salvage a draw in this FA Cup Second Qualifying Round game at Llanelian Road.
Twice First Division Farsley Celtic took the lead, but twice came back the Bay,
in what was a poor performance.
Despite an afternoon when they never really got going, it was the Bay who nearly
took the lead after eight minutes when Jason Jones's header was saved by Liam
Sutcliffe in the Celtic goal.
James McIlvogue sent a glancing header from Marc Limbert's free kick wide in the
25th minute but then the Yorkshire side came more into the game as Andy Shields
and Chris Newton both fired wide.
And it was Farsley who took the lead on 32 minutes, when from a free kick on the
left Richard Hepworth was headed home by the unmarked Simon Brookes from eight
yards.
The Bay were trying their hardest to break down a determined and stubborn
Farsley defence, and their efforts paid off when in the 68th minute Deiniol
Graham's left wing cross was headed in from ten yards by James McIlvogue.
But Farsley took the lead once again eight minutes later. Another free kick on
the left found Andy Lamb whose header found the net from close range.
They could, and should have wrapped up the win with five minutes remaining,
Hepworth broke clear only for Paul Smith to parry his shot and only a minute
later the Bay could have equalised when substitute Graham Roberts' header
clipped the bar.
The Bay's dreams were looking as though they were coming to end as the match
approached three minutes of injury time. Deep into time added on Graham Roberts
was brought down just outside the box and from the free kick Limbert curled his
effort to the far post where another substitute and player manager Colin Caton
powered a header into the net and save his side.
A disappointing afternoon for Bay fans, but one which could have been a lot
worse were it not for the efforts of the player manager.
