Farsley Celtic 3 - 1 Colwyn Bay

(after extra time - 1-1 at full time)  - 02/10/01 - F.A. Cup 2nd qualifying round replay

Battling Bay crashed out of the FA cup on a night when nothing went their way in West Yorkshire. Yet it could have been so different had a James McIlvogue effort seconds from the end of normal time ended up on the right side of the post. Playing into a very strong wind in the first half, Bay defending superbly,  restricting the hosts to few chances. The deadlock was broken 10 minutes after the interval when Andy Lamb fired Farsley in front. Bay full back Owain Roberts suffered a badly gashed leg trying to thwart lamb and needed to be taken to Bradford Infirmary. Despite this double setback Bay  responded superbly when within seconds of the re-start a Marc Limbert free-kick was headed home by player-manager Colin Caton. Colwyn then suffered a further blow when Graham Roberts collided with an unprotected metal fence and was left lying in agony on the terracing for almost half an hour. Paramedics at the ground had already travelled with Owain Roberts to hospital so it was some time before Graham Roberts, who was also taken to the infirmary, was able to receive treatment. Bay refused to buckle in the face of adversity and extra time was looming when McIlvogue hit a shot which rolled agonisingly wide. Chris Newton fired Farsley ahead in the first period of extra time and with Colwyn pushing forward in a bid to equalise, the hosts grabbed a killer third goal through Mark Regan with five minutes left. The two Robertses were later able to return on the team coach, but Bay were left to count the cost of missing out on a lucrative FA cup run.
