Bodedern 0 - 2 Colwyn Bay - 16/02/02 - North Wales Coast FA Cup 4th Round
Colwyn Bay gained their
place in the next round of the North Wales Coast Challenge, although they were
made to fight all the way by Anglesey side Bodedern.
The Gwynedd League leaders were unbeaten before the game and were keen to cause
an upset against the Seagulls, four times winners of the competition during the
last ten years.
Bay calmed the early nerves by scoring after only five minutes. A cross from the
right by Owain Roberts found Alun Evans, who scored from fifteen yards.
Bodedern were lucky not to have conceded a spot kick on thirteen minutes when
Kelvin Evans brought down Deiniol Graham after the former Manchester United
striker had teased the Bodedern defence. But referee Kevin Parry from
Llanfairpwll surprised the crowd by allowing play to continue. Bay continued to
boss the play, although they had to wait until just before the interval to
double their lead. It was a local lad, Deiniol Graham who hails from nearby
Caergeiliog, who scored the Bay's second three minutes before the interval.
A scramble in the Bodedern penalty area which saw Graham's efforts cleared off
the line by Tomos Jones and then pushed onto the bar by home keeper Gareth
Roberts, came to an end when Graham scored from close range.
In the opening minute of
the second half, Bodedern could have reduced the deficit, Emyr Roberts unlucky
to see his effort hit the post and the Seagulls happy to clear.
The Bay had a number of chances to extend their lead, but failed to convert
against a determined Bodedern side. Gary Curtis and Jason Jones saw efforts go
wide of the post while home keeper Roberts produced a number of superb second
half saves and did well to push Alun Evans effort round the post.
Roberts also produced an excellent saves to deny James McIlvogue and then
Graham, as Bay tried to add to
their tally.
With a quarter of an hour left, and Bodedern were again unlucky to hit the Bay's
post. Emyr Roberts was once again the player out of luck as Bay hung onto a 2-0
lead and progress to the next round.
