Bishop Auckland 1 - 2 Colwyn Bay - 12/01/02 - League

The Bay started their new year with a 2-1 in the North East against Bishop Auckland.

Having not played since their 1-1 draw at home to Blyth Spartans on December 29th, the Seagulls gained revenge having lost 2-1 at home back in September.

With Colin Caton's side not having kicked a ball in anger for a fortnight, the visitors looked a little rusty early on and almost conceded a second-minute goal when Anthony Lee fired narrowly wide from 15 yards which would have given their newly appointed manager Alan Shoulder a dream start.

Ten minutes later Danny Brunskill set off on a run from the half way line into the visitors' penalty area, but he was foiled by a brave save by Paul Smith.

Home keeper David Campbell was at fault in the 29th minute when the Seagulls broke the deadlock, bringing down James McIlvogue in the area. Deiniol Graham stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, and the Bay were ahead.

After that and the home team stepped up a gear and within 10 minutes Brunskill thought he had grabbed an equaliser when his far post header from Andrew Shaw's cross went into the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Continued pressure from the home team almost brought a goal just before the break but keeper Smith produced another athletic save to tip Carl Chillingsworth's 25-yard lob over the bar.

The Bishops were on top during the opening spell of the second half and within a minute Lee's 20-yarder was well gathered by Smith. Four minutes later Chillingsworth grazed the bar from long range but the Colwyn defence stood firm.

Bay doubled their advantage in the 65th minute when, after good work from Craig Lawton, McIlvogue squared the ball for Deiniol Graham to score his second of the game.

From the restart Brunskill had a close range effort again saved by Smith, this time with his feet, but the Bishops did pull a goal back in the 88th minute through Kevin Bromley, although it was too late to deny Colin Caton's side their fifth away success of the season and a result which moved them into seventh place into the table.
