Colwyn Bay 0 - 5 Barrow - 23/03/02 - League
The Seagulls are still hovering
over the Unibond League Premier Division relegation zone and the play off
position after a heavy defeat at home to Barrow.
Despite the final scoreline it was the home side who had the opening chance in
the first minute when captain Craig Lawton's through-ball found Stuart Scheuber
but his angled drive was blocked by keeper Simon Bishop.
A minute later Barrow went in front as Simon Shaw released Carl Waters to crack
a low shot past Billy Stewart from 18 yards. Stewart, signed from Rhyl to cover
for the injured Paul Smith, kept his side in the game with saves from Grant
Holt, Waters and Wayne Bullimore while all that Colwyn could offer was a
25-yarder from Marc Limbert that flew wide of the post in the 34th minute.
The Seagulls showed much more determination after the break and in their best
move of the match on 53 minutes, a diving header from James McIlvogue was pushed
away by Bishop.
From the resulting corner kick, Jason Jones headed wide but Stewart had to
produce another save to deny Steve Hausham in the 62nd minute. McIlvogue did
well to brush off two challenges a minute later only to see Bishop save his
shot.
Just when the Bay were beginning to get to grips with Barrow and looking for the
equaliser the Cumbrian side grabbed a crucial second goal in the 67th minute.
Hausham, who along with Waters caused the home defence a lot of problems, broke
through to beat Stewart with
a low shot.
Three minutes later it was 3-0 and no way back for the Seagulls when Paul Jones
brought down substitute Gary Jones in the box and Bullimore converted the
penalty.
Hausham got the fourth goal in the 77th minute when he broke on the left to slot
the ball past the advancing Stewart. Scheuber and Dean Williams went close to
collecting a consolation goal for the hosts before substitute Lee Jackson
wrapped it up in the 90th minute with a scorching low volley from the edge of
the box that gave the keeper absolutely no chance.
