Altrincham 4 - 0 Colwyn Bay - 02/02/02 - League

Having not played for over a fortnight, the Bay fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Altrincham at Moss Lane in the UniBond League Premier Division.

Altrincham's opening goal came after 17 minutes when Ian Craney emerged from a scramble in the box to shoot home from 12 yards.

The Seagulls then enjoyed a good spell of possession without creating a clear-cut opportunity and ten minutes later they trailed 2-0. Another goalmouth scramble ended with Karl Furlong finding the net from eight yards.

The Bay tried to make an impression on the game and in the 31st minute Craig Lawton broke through the middle to crack a 20-yard drive narrowly wide.

Their hopes were dashed before half time as the Robins killer third goal arrived on 39 minutes when Rod Thornley was adjudged to have been fouled by Craig Hogg in the area and the man who scored a hat-trick against the Seagulls earlier in the season picked himself up to plant the spot-kick into the bottom corner of the net past Paul Smith.

The Seagulls were unlucky not to pull a goal back in the 45th minute when Deiniol Graham shot on the turn from six yards and keeper Stuart Coburn blocked it with his legs.

With Altrincham easing up in the second half, the Bay had much more of the play but another effort from Graham was well saved by Coburn in the 49th minute.

The better chances continued to fall for the home side as Hulme volleyed against the posts and a diving header from Thornley also struck the upright. The impressive Thornley got his second of the game in the 69th minute, slotting the ball past Smith from 10 yards, and he was only denied a hat-trick by the post seven minutes from time.
