Colwyn Bay 3 - 0 Accrington Stanley - 04/09/01 - League
An excellent performance from the
Bay which secured their first home league win of the season at Llanelian Road.
It was Accrington who started the brightest of the two teams, Simon Garden going
close twice in the opening three minutes but the Seagulls soon came back. After
Craig Hogg and James McIlvogue went close with chances, they went ahead after 15
minutes when Alun
Evans won a free kick 25 yards out and Paul Jones teed the ball up for Marc
Limbert to rifle it into the top corner.
The Bay could have gone further ahead on the half hour, when Hogg's through ball
put McIlvogue clear only for Speare, who had a good game for the visitors, to
make an excellent save.
In the second half Deiniol Graham went close with a chipped shot just over the
bar but Graham grabbed his second goal in two games on 54 minutes when he
received a pass from Stuart Scheuber to loop his shot over keeper Jamie Speare
from the edge of the box.
Evans was denied by Speare and the excellent Jason Jones pulled a shot wide
after he latched onto the ball.
For Accrington, Russell Payne's drive was headed off the line by the Bay's
impressive central defender Craig Hogg on 70 minutes and Paul Smith produced a
fantastic save to deny Stanley substitute Robbie Williams.
The Bay's third goal came with three minutes left when Limbert latched onto a
loose ball on the edge of the box, sold an outrageous dummy and hammered it into
the bottom corner.
The Bay, especially in defence looked solid and Colin Caton was delighted with
the win.
