Marine 4 - 3 Colwyn Bay - 30/09/00 - FA Cup 2Q

The Bay crashed out at the first hurdle of the FA Cup at Marine despite a brave second half fightback, when it seemed they had done enough to earn a replay at Llanelian Road.

The Seagulls were below par in the first half and Marine took advantage of defensive errors to take the lead in the ninth minute. Neil Black broke on the right to square the ball for Jonathan Bainbridge to slot home from 12 yards.

For the Bay, a Deiniol Graham effort was fumbled by ‘keeper Clarke which was then cleared, while Jonathan Cross went wide.

Marine went 2-0 up in the 24th minute, when Karl Robinson found a gap at the near post to squeeze a shot in the net. Bay came close to reducing the arrears just before half time, when Marc Limbert’s 25 yard free kick was tipped over the bar by Clarke.

There was more determination and purpose to the Bay’s play in the second half, with the Seagulls attacking from the start. Substitute Frank Gibbons was unlucky to see his shot hit the post on 54 minutes. Four minutes later Gibbons was on target, after good work from Graham.

But two minutes later, Marine had restored their 2 goal advantage, when Robinson headed in Gamble’s corner at the near post.

But Bay did not give up, and incredibly within a minute it was 3-2 when Limbert’s corner was headed in by Deiniol Graham.

The Bay were refused what appeared to be a blatant penalty in the 75th minute, when Limbert’s free kick was clearly handled by a defender, but the Referee decided against awarding a free kick.

The Bay were awarded a penalty soon after, when following a Limbert corner a foul was committed. Deiniol Graham stood up to take the penalty and he coolly slotted home the equaliser.

The game was heading for a replay, until two minutes into stoppage time, when a long free kick down the middle caught the Bay defence napping and Mark Schofield sent a glancing header past Richie Roberts, and thus end the Bay’s FA Cup dreams for another year.
